Boundless Blade is a 2D, top-down action game with heavy usage of Wacom tablet controls. The game is based on the movie Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa.
This project was created in Game Studio I in the Spring of 2023 with a team where I served as the team's producer, sound designer, and systems designer.
My role on the team was in essence wearing multiple hats but for each I had something to provide to the project that ended up being a valuable lesson for me as a designer with skills in systems design and sound design.
With sound design, I built many custom systems in Unity using C# that elevated our game's sound profile beyond basic music and sound effects. Changing what fx played for specific attacks and upgrades as well as designing a tool that pitched the attack sound upward for successive combo strings, giving an extra push to the overall game feel.
Lastly with systems design, I focused especially on balancing the game's upgrade system making sure that the player felt powerful while also being fair towards the overall experience, making it fun and engaging without having the gameplay become stale. These skills in balancing led to me overall learning the lesson that effective game balance must come from the beginning and be carefully monitored over the course of the project so as to not lose sight of the goal. This lesson followed me into future projects as well, like with the full production on Poly-Vinyl Pests!
